The Princeton line

For its first fifteen years the Princeton was, in Fender's own framing, a Champ with a tone control and a slightly larger output transformer: a single-ended 6V6 student amp that tracked the Champ's revisions from the 1940s Woodie through the tweed 5-series to the 5F2-A. The brownface 6G2 broke that lineage entirely, replacing the single-ended stage with a fixed-bias push-pull pair of 6V6s and adding tremolo. Blackface refined that push-pull platform into the AA964 and, with reverb, the AA1164 Princeton Reverb — the version that made the name famous.

5B2 1948–1953 5 W single-ended 6V6 The single-ended 6V6 circuit in a TV-front tweed cabinet, still using an octal dual-triode preamp. Two preamp stages plus a simple treble-cut tone control distinguish it from the tone-less Champ; the larger output transformer is the other difference. Early-tweed dating is approximate.

5D2 1954–1955 5 W single-ended 6V6 The preamp switches from the octal dual triode to a 12AX7, mirroring the Champ's 5E1 move to the 9-pin front end. Output stays single-ended 6V6.

5F2-A 1957–1961 5 W single-ended 6V6 The definitive tweed Princeton and the last single-ended one: a 12AX7 into a cathode-biased single-ended 6V6, with a capacitor-coupled single-knob tone control and 22 k negative feedback from the speaker to the unbypassed cathode of the driver stage (V1B). This is the DC signal path the corpus documents at circuit_ref 5f2a; everything after it in the family is push-pull.

6G2 1961–1963 12 W push-pull 2x6V6GT The break in the line. The single-ended cathode-biased 6V6 of the 5F2-A is abandoned for a fixed-bias push-pull pair of 6V6GTs — a fundamentally different, more powerful power stage — plus a 7025 preamp, a 12AX7 whose half runs a tremolo oscillator, and brownface cosmetics. This is the push-pull turn the corpus's 5f2a page warns about: do not read 5F2-A single-ended values onto anything from the 6G2 forward.

AA964 1964–1968 12 W push-pull 2x6V6GT The push-pull Princeton in blackface trim, without reverb. Refines the 6G2 platform — same fixed-bias 6V6 pair and tremolo — under the mid-1960s cosmetic and circuit-numbering scheme, with a GZ34 rectifier and a cathodyne phase inverter sharing one 12AX7 with the tremolo oscillator. The tremolo modulates the output tubes' bias line directly rather than through the optocoupler the larger blackface amps use. This is the DC signal path the corpus documents at circuit_ref aa964.

AA1164 1964–1967 12 W push-pull 2x6V6GT The Princeton with a tube reverb tank added ahead of the tremolo, on the same fixed-bias push-pull 6V6 output — the configuration that made the name famous. A 12AT7 drives the reverb, and the AA1164 drawing specifies a 5U4GB rectifier rather than the GZ34 used by the larger blackface amps. Unlike them it keeps a split-load phase inverter and modulates the output stage's bias for tremolo instead of shunting a preamp grid. The circuit continued under silverface cosmetics from 1968; the modern reissue rates the same 2x6V6GT stage at 15 W.

Dating & notes

Two eras with a hard boundary. Everything through the 5F2-A (1946-1961) is a single-ended 6V6 "Champ with a tone control"; everything from the 6G2 forward (1961+) is fixed-bias push-pull 2x6V6 — a different power stage, not a revision of the earlier one. Tweed sub-revision dates (5B2-5F2) are approximate and overlap. Push-pull power ratings are commonly cited around 12 W for the original blackface amps; the current Princeton Reverb reissue is rated 15 W. Preamp tube type 7025 is a low-noise 12AX7 variant. Marketing names are used descriptively.
