The Pro line

Fender's mid-size single-15" workhorse, sitting between the Deluxe/Super class and the piggyback Bassman/Twin/Showman class for its whole run. The tweed circuit went through more revisions than almost anything else in the catalogue — five narrow-designation steps from the TV-front 5A5 to the narrow-panel 5E5-A alone — settling on its best-known form in 1956: a two-channel 12AY7 front end with an unusually deep shared second gain stage, a passive James tone network, and a driver + split-load cathodyne phase inverter feeding a fixed-bias 6L6 pair. The name moved onto an entirely different circuit in 1960, when the brown-panel 6G5 dropped the tube rectifier for solid-state and added an optical tremolo — the amplifier the Pro name carried until the line was discontinued ahead of the blackface era.

Fender's TV-front Pro spans 1947-1953 across three close designations (5A5/5B5/5C5) that a published field guide treats as one era rather than three sharply-bounded circuits, and dating individual examples is correspondingly soft — a documented 5A5 example is dated to 1951, inside the range used here. No confident per-model tube list survives for this entry; the era's preamp ran either 6SC7-family octal triodes or, later in the span, noval 12AY7/12AX7 (see 5C5 below for the transition). history entry
5B5 1950–1951 20 W push-pull 2x6L6 A close revision of the 5A5 within the same TV-front era — the forum-documented difference is a coupling-capacitor value or two, not a topology change. Grouped with 5A5/5C5 under the same 1947-1953 field-guide span; the year bracket here is a defensible subdivision, not an independently dated boundary. history entry
5C5 1951–1953 20 W push-pull 2x6L6 The point where the octal preamp/phase-inverter tubes (6SC7-family) give way to the noval 12AY7/12AX7 the rest of the line keeps into the narrow-panel era — a 6SN7 variant of the 5C5 is also documented, suggesting the transition was not instantaneous across the production run. The filter choke is removed during this revision and the speaker and external-speaker jacks move to the underside of the chassis, closing out the TV-front cabinet era. history entry

5E5 1955–1956 25 W push-pull 2x6L6GB The narrow-panel cabinet revision, one year ahead of the 5E5-A this corpus documents in full (amps/5e5a/). Circuit-wise it is close to a scaled-up 5E3 Deluxe: the phase inverter moves from the 5D5's paraphase arrangement to the split-load (cathodyne) topology the 5E5-A keeps, but the power section stays cathode-biased and the negative-feedback loop the 5D5 had added is removed outright — the two changes the 5E5-A would each partially reverse (fixed bias returns, and NFB comes back paired with a new Presence control). Wattage is an estimate: cathode bias on the same tube set as the fixed-biased 5E5-A typically yields somewhat less clean headroom, not an independently published figure. history entry
5E5-A 1956–1960 30 W push-pull 2x6L6GB The definitive tweed Pro, documented in full in this corpus (amps/5e5a/). Fixed bias returns, paired with a restored negative-feedback loop and the line's first Presence control, over the same driver + split-load cathodyne phase inverter the 5E5 introduced. The passive James tone network (separate Bass and Treble pots, no single shared tone knob) is unique to this revision within the line — neither the cathode-biased 5D5/5E5 nor the later solid-state-rectified 6G5 use it in this exact two-knob form. 5E5-A circuit ↗
6G5 / 6G5-A 1960–1963 40 W push-pull 2x6L6GC The name moves onto a different circuit entirely: a brown-tolex combo that drops the tube rectifier for a solid-state one, replaces the cathodyne with a long-tailed-pair phase inverter (one 7025 bottle doing the whole job, both halves), and adds tremolo — a phase-shift oscillator on a 7025 of its own, driving a lamp and photoresistor that shunt the channel-mixing node to ground. That is the optical tremolo the drawing shows, not the phase-mixed harmonic vibrato a secondary field guide names it; the oscillator and the driver stage ahead of the inverter account for two of the amp's five 7025 bottles, the two channels for two more. No reverb. Still a single 15-inch speaker combo, still carrying a Presence control, and still fixed-bias — the one thread that survives from the 5E5-A across the discontinuity. The 6G5 ran 6L6GC output tubes; the 6G5-A that follows it inside this window moved to 5881s. Dating & notes

Dating for the three TV-front designations (5A5/5B5/5C5) rests on a single field-guide source that treats 1947-1953 as one span rather than three independently-dated circuits, corroborated only by one dated example (a 1951 5A5) and one forum account of what changed between 5A5 and 5B5; the year brackets given for those three are defensible subdivisions of that span, not firm boundaries, in the same spirit as this corpus's Champ family notes. 5E5's wattage is likewise an estimate (cathode bias vs. the 5E5-A's fixed bias on the same tube set), not an independently published figure. The 6G5-A (1961-1963, 5881 output tubes) is documented by the same field guide as a running change to the 6G5, and the row above carries the pair's shared 1960-1963 window under a combined designation — the same treatment the Super line's 6G4 / 6G4-A row gets. A contributor drawing the -A should split it into a row of its own here, not a new family. Two circuits in this line have documented entries in the corpus — the 5E5-A (amps/5e5a/) and the brown 6G5 (amps/6g5/), which is where the line's tremolo type is settled: the drawing wires a lamp and photoresistor into the audio path, so this file calls it an optical tremolo rather than following the field guide's "harmonic vibrato" label. Every other row is history-tier (circuit_ref: null) until one is built.
