The Deluxe line

The Deluxe is Fender's mid-power workhorse: a pair of 6V6 output tubes that begins in the post-war wood-cabinet "woodie" and runs through the whole tweed sequence, gaining an on/off standby, negative feedback, and finally the interactive dual-volume narrow-panel circuit that made the 5E3 famous. At the 1961 brown redesign it swaps cathode bias for fixed bias and adds tremolo, and in 1963 the blackface generation both continues as a bare Deluxe and spins off a reverb-equipped sibling that becomes the far better-known amp. Tweed-era production dates are approximate — Fender did not date-stamp early circuits — so sub-circuit ranges are the defensible spans, not hard boundaries.

Model 26 1946–1948 push-pull 2x6V6 The line's wood-cabinet ancestor, sold in a natural maple/walnut/mahogany enclosure before tweed existed. A single 6SN7 preamp feeds a cathode-biased 6V6 pair; published power is cited loosely at roughly 10-14 W. The one documented running change is speaker-driven: early field-coil speakers carried the output transformer on the chassis, and when Fender moved to fixed-magnet Jensens around 1947 the transformer moved onto the speaker basket.

5A3 1948–1953 push-pull 2x6V6 The first tweed Deluxe: the woodie circuit re-housed in a tweed-covered cabinet with the narrower upper/lower "TV-front" panels around the grille. Still a cathode-biased 6V6 pair on a 5Y3 rectifier, rated loosely around 10-14 W, with dual inputs and separate volume controls carried over from the wood era.

5B3 1953–1954 push-pull 2x6V6 Essentially the 5A3 circuit moved into the new wide-panel tweed cabinet — the change here is cosmetic/mechanical rather than a topology revision. Cathode bias and the 6V6/5Y3 complement carry straight over.

5C3 1953–1954 push-pull 2x6V6 The first real circuit revision in the wide-panel run: it adds a dedicated on/off toggle, an external speaker jack, and a negative-feedback loop around the output stage — the loop tightening the amp versus the feedback-free earlier circuits.

5D3 1954–1955 12 W push-pull 2x6V6 Matches the 5C3 but drops the negative-feedback loop again, returning to the more open, feedback-free voicing that the following narrow-panel circuit keeps. It also retires the octal 6SC7 preamp for a 12AY7 and a 12AX7 wired as a self-balancing paraphase inverter. This is the last wide-panel Deluxe before the narrow-panel redesign.

5E3 1955–1960 15 W push-pull 2x6V6 The definitive tweed Deluxe and the most copied of the line. The narrow-panel cabinet arrives, and the circuit adopts a 12AY7 front end into a 12AX7 driving a cathodyne (split-load) phase inverter, cathode-biased 6V6GT pair, and no negative feedback. Its hallmark is the interaction between the two volume controls, which share a plate load so that turning one up shifts the other's voicing — a quirk, not an accident, that defines the amp's overdrive.

6G3 1961–1963 15 W push-pull 2x6V6 The brown-Tolex redesign is a clean break from the tweed circuit: fixed (non-adjustable) bias replaces cathode bias, a GZ34 replaces the 5Y3, and the amp gains a tremolo and a two-channel (Normal/Bright) front panel with separate controls. The single-knob tweed tone stack and cathodyne inverter give way to the brownface-era topology on the road to the blackface circuit.

AA763 / AB763 1963–1966 22 W push-pull 2x6V6 The blackface generation both continues the plain Deluxe and forks the family. The non-reverb blackface Deluxe (AA763, then AB763) rises to a 22 W rating on a long-tailed-pair inverter, fixed bias with an adjustable trim, GZ34 rectifier, and a Normal channel plus a vibrato channel with treble/bass. Alongside it Fender launched a reverb-equipped sibling on the AB763 platform — the Deluxe Reverb — which outlived and out-sold the bare Deluxe. The reverb branch is documented with the Deluxe Reverb line, and the AB763 circuit entry belongs there, since that drawing is specifically the Deluxe Reverb. The plain non-reverb blackface Deluxe described here is not yet a documented circuit, so this is a history-tier entry only.

Dating & notes

Tweed sub-circuit dating (5A3/5B3/5C3/5D3) is approximate; the field guide brackets the wide-panel trio to 1953-1955 without firm per-circuit boundaries, so the ranges above are defensible spans. Early published power figures (~10-14 W) are loose factory-era ratings, not measured output; wattage is left null where only such figures exist. The AA763/AB763 row deliberately covers only the non-reverb Deluxe and the moment of the reverb split — the Deluxe Reverb line's own page carries the reverb branch, and the AB763 circuit entry with it.
